Under 2's Rooms
The under 2 rooms caters for children 3 months to approximately 24 months. We can take up to 24 children. The under 2's have a 1 to 3 staff ratio. The rooms are designed to encourage exploration with mirrors and low accessible shelving allows the children to choose their own activities. The rooms are also split into different learning areas such as a construction area, a home corner, a music area, painting and various types of imaginative play. There is a seperate sleep room for children to sleep or rest. We aim to work closely with our parents in order to establish a routine for our youngest children. We follow the Pre Birth to Three Curriculum and the staff use individual diaries to record your child's day.
The 2-3 Room
The 2-3 Room is split across three rooms; The Activity Room, The Arts and Crafts Room and A Multi-Purpose Room. The rooms are registered for 20 children and we work on a 1 to 5 staff ratio. The Activity Room has a wide selection of resources including construction toys, jigsaws, bricks, shape sorters, puzzles and larger equipment such as dolls houses and garages. Activities in this room help the children to learn key co-ordination skills, motor skills and early reading and writing skills. The Arts and Craft Room offers a chance for children to express themselves and includes lots of messy activities such as painting, sticking, sand and water. The Multi-Purpose Room can be used for a variety of different activities such as music, movement and group time. After lunch it can also be used for a quiet room where your child can relax and have a sleep. There is good facilities for toilet training. We follow the Pre Birth to Three Curriculum, and planning is responsive and spontaneous.
The Messy Room
This is an area where your child can put on an apron and really express themselves. The room is a treasure cove of colours, paints, materials and ingredients, allowing them to explore and experiment. It is a great space to create new things as well as develop their social and interaction skills such as sharing.
Our largest room offers a vast, bright and colorful space with a view straight out to our garden and outside play area. The Pre-School room is registered for 24 children and work on a 1 to 8 child ratio. We look to incorporate the outdoors into our activities and bring the colours and textures of the garden into our aesthetic development using them as art materials. We also interchange our materials in the sand and water trays regularly so that the children can explore and experiment with different medium.
This Room has an array of educational benefits such as a computer with educational games and puzzles and a range of pre-school equipment. All activities are prepared on a daily basis to create stimulating and varied activities.
These activities aim to meet all the children’s individual needs and each day, the tables and easels are set up with art and craft activities to tie in with our curriculum and planning.
In our Pre-school room, the children enjoy a range of independent and group activities to develop their social and personal skills. These include; ‘free play’, music, circle time, baking, role play, snack time and different letter and number activities. We can also offer Enjoy-a-ball and The Drama Mill. We work in Partnership with East Lothian Council to provide Pre-School Education. We follow The Curriculum for Excellence and prepare our children for entry into Primary One.
Each child has a learning story which are used by the children, staff and parents. Learning stories contain photographs, observations and drawings. Children have ownership of these folders and are actively involved in recording their own learning.
